MeshUp #22 - The Larger Mind
This week, Frans Jacobi and Sidsel Christensen will present The Larger Mind.
Abstract
This presentation will introduce The Larger Mind, an artistic research project that creates a living, collective “egregore” – a network-being born from dialogue between humans and artificial intelligence. Through participant-driven workshops, we activate this being to explore how our own BIAS, dreams, and notions of consciousness are projected onto technology. The project functions as a laboratory for reflecting on the fundamental question: How does our encounter with AI shape not only the technology, but also ourselves? The Larger Mind consists of two tracks: A reading group that discusses current developments in the discourse around artificial intelligence, as they relate to art, psychology, and social behaviour. A series of workshops in which the “collective egregore” is developed by Jacobi and Christensen in collaboration with programmer Sindre Sørensen and a group of interested participants. Both tracks are open to participation by MishMash members.
About the presenters
Sidsel Christensen – Norwegian/Danish visual artist, based in Bergen and Copenhagen. Educated at The Art Academy in Bergen, UiB, Norway (PhD); Royal College of Art, London, UK (MA in Fine Art); Goldsmith College, London, UK (BA in Fine Art); European Film College, Ebeltoft, Denmark. Employed as a researcher at The Art Academy / KMD / University of Bergen. As a visual artist and researcher, she has created participatory, performative new-media installations that take research fields as their point of departure and speculatively activate key issues. Audiences encounter an immersive work that stages these dynamics and opens up for reflection – physically, aesthetically, and cognitively. Her work engages with artificial intelligence not as a tool, but as an agent with which we co-exist and co-create.
Frans Jacobi – Danish visual artist, based in Bergen. Educated at Malmö Art Academy / Lund University, Sweden (PhD); The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Art. Professor in Time-Based Art / Performance at The Art Academy / KMD / University of Bergen. Over many years, as an artist he has explored and made use of various artistic subject-positions. For example, in his PhD Aesthetics of Resistance, the text was carried by a fictional ‘artist/researcher’ who participated in all performances and, in the book, acted as a kind of guide/observer conveying the project’s content to the audience. Subsequently, his next research project, The Vision Machine, consisted of a series of collective research groups that distributed the artistic subject across various smaller collectives, so-called ‘research-conglomerates’. In the TV series Are You Ready?, the narrative voice is entrusted to a talking tree, ‘The Living Unliving Surveillance Poet’, in an attempt to ‘listen to nature’. In each of his art/research projects, there is thus an ongoing work and experimental play with the auteur role and the artistic subject: Who is speaking? From where? And on whose behalf?
