This week, Matthew Landers will present The Impact of ‘Artificial Creativity’ on the Aims of Education.
Abstract
This presentation will begin with a brief historical survey of the idea of human ‘creativity,’ highlighting ambiguities and difficulties across the various meanings, before landing on a systems approach to the idea. In the process, I will speculate on what it might mean for an AI model to be ‘creative.’ Finally, I will question whether the aims of education should be reframed if such a thing as ‘artificial creativity’ were to exist.
Bio
Matthew Landers is an associate professor at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Høgskulen på Vestlandet), where he teaches in the English department. His areas of research include artificial intelligence, education, and critical thinking. His most recent publications examine definition problems in two different domains: the meanings of artificial general intelligence in AI research (AI & Society, 2025), and the meaning of ‘critical’ thinking in John Dewey’s How We Think (Educational Theory, 2026).
