MeshUp #30: The Body in Context: Wearable Biosensing for Music, Art and Health

This week, Ulysse Côté-Allard will present The Body in Context: Wearable Biosensing for Music, Art and Health.
Abstract
What can muscle activity tell us if we do not know how a person is moving? How should we interpret a change in heart activity during a physically demanding performance? Understanding the body requires more than recording individual signals. It requires knowing what happens together. In practice, collecting this context often means combining several devices, working with different software tools and aligning recordings afterwards. In this presentation, I will introduce SiFi Labs’ wearable research platform, which records muscle activity, movement, heart activity and skin temperature in sync within a single device. Through examples from health research and creative interaction, I will explore what these combined measurements make possible. I will also present the software tools we have developed to help researchers record, interpret and use these signals in their own experiments, interactive applications and AI models.
Bio
Ulysse Côté-Allard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Technology Systems at the University of Oslo and co-founder and CEO of SiFi Labs. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering from Université Laval. His research focuses on machine learning and biosignal-based human-computer interaction, including how people and adaptive systems learn together.
At SiFi Labs, he develops wearable technology and digital metrics to measure how patients’ symptoms and physical function change in everyday life. Its wearable devices and software provide the foundation for this work and for researchers developing new forms of physiological feedback and human-computer interaction.
Access
MishMash MeetUps are short, informal meetings in the consortium where both early career and established researchers present ongoing projects. The events are open for everyone, but, for security reasons, Zoom links are only provided to people that are affiliated with a MishMash Work Package. If not, please ask for access. The MeshUps are not recorded since we want these short events to also serve as a social meeting point for the centre.
