MeshUp #32: From Artwork to Algorithm

– · Zoom · Add to calendar

This week, Torill Haugen from Kunstsilo presents From Artwork to Algorithm: Digital Exploration of Nordic Modernism.

Abstract

From Artwork to Algorithm: Digital Exploration of Nordic Modernism is a three-year innovation project led by Kunstsilo that explores how artificial intelligence can be used to unlock, connect, and make accessible the world’s largest collection of Nordic modernist art. The project brings together art historians, curators, technologists, and AI specialists to develop new data-driven tools that can analyze large volumes of art historical information, generate new insights, and create richer ways for people to discover and engage with the collection.

Building on Kunstsilo’s unique position as an international centre for Nordic modernism, the project seeks to transform fragmented collections data, archives, publications, interviews, and other knowledge sources into an interconnected digital resource. By combining artificial intelligence, machine learning, and semantic search technologies, the project will enable more advanced discovery, automated metadata generation, and new connections between artworks, artists, themes, and historical contexts.

The long-term ambition is to make the collection more accessible to diverse audiences, including the general public, researchers, educators, and cultural professionals. The project explores new forms of knowledge sharing and interpretation, including personalised learning experiences, AI-assisted exploration, and innovative digital interfaces that allow users to engage with art beyond traditional museum search systems.

A central principle of the project is the responsible and ethical use of technology. The work includes addressing issues related to copyright, data quality, transparency, and trust, while ensuring that Kunstsilo retains control over its collections data and knowledge resources. Through collaboration with technology partners, the museum sector, and research environments, the project also aims to contribute new knowledge and best practices for the wider cultural heritage field.

Access

MishMash MeetUps are short, informal meetings in the consortium where both early career and established researchers present ongoing projects. The events are open for everyone, but, for security reasons, Zoom links are only provided to people that are affiliated with a MishMash Work Package. If not, please ask for access. The MeshUps are not recorded since we want these short events to also serve as a social meeting point for the centre.
