Kalliopi Nikolou is a visual artist born in Corinth, Greece, and based between Oslo and Corinth. Her practice moves between moving image, installation, and research, combining classical training in painting and material making with computational image systems. She works with both manual and digital tools, treating media not only as instruments of production but also as ways of seeing and understanding the world. Her work focuses on how images are not neutral representations, but systems that organise visibility, attention, and power. She is interested in how technical, social, and cultural infrastructures shape what can be seen, shared, and understood, as well as what is excluded or made invisible. Nikolou holds an MA in Fine Arts from Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam (2010), a BA in Audio/Visual from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (2008), and a BA in Fine Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts (2004), including an Erasmus exchange at Kunsthochschule Weissensee, Berlin (2003). Her professional experience includes working in Berlin in 2020 for a large social media company as a content moderator, where she trained facial recognition systems. This experience informs her artistic practice and her interest in how images are classified, sorted, and made legible by machines and institutions. Her practice is research-based and often collaborative. She works with moving image, installation, and site-based methods, combining digital processes with manual practices of editing, making, and material construction. Her current research focuses on generative AI and archival film, especially early silent cinema and public-domain footage. She is interested in how everyday life is shaped by image systems and intersecting technical, social, and cultural infrastructures. These systems do not simply show the world; they actively produce it, organise it, and limit how it can be perceived and understood. Her work follows these operations at the level of editing, where meaning is constantly constructed, disrupted, and reconfigured. She has experience in teaching and workshop-based work in artistic and educational contexts. Nikolou is the founder and curator of Corinth Art Platform (CAP), a platform for contemporary art and public projects in Corinth, Greece. She also participates in collaborative research practices focused on art, technology, and public space. She is a member of the Norwegian Visual Artists (NBK) and the Young Artists’ Society (UKS).
