Music Archive of the Future: AI for Digital Composer Catalogues
Summary
Building on the international project on digital work catalogues Edvard Grieg and Norwegian Musical Heritage (katalog.musikkarven.no), this seed initiative explores AI-supported methods for semantic search, transcription, and analysis across music archives and catalogues. The project — led jointly by the University of Bergen (Centre for Grieg Research and University Library) and the National Library of Norway — investigates how large language models, OCR/HTR, and audio analysis can be applied to structured music metadata, and how catalogues can be enriched by interconnecting multimedia datasets from diverse archival material, including folk tune and hymn recognition through incipit encoding and audio analysis. Workshops and seminars in Oslo and Bergen during autumn 2026 prepare the ground for larger research infrastructure proposals, with a project report published on katalog.musikkarven.no.
