This week, Lise Amy Hansen and Roos van Berkel from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) will present Making Movement Matter.

Abstract

Movement is how we sense, express ourselves and connect with others and the world. As AI tools for capturing, analysing and responding to movement develop quickly, it matters what systems treat as movement in the first place: what they track, what they shape, and what they quietly discard.

In this MeshUp, Lise Amy Hansen will start by introducing Making Movement Matter, the overarching theme of the research group ENACT at AHO. It focuses on how the kinaesthetic and relational qualities of movement, beyond position and poses, can be made palpable and accessible for the development of systems where movement is tracked.

Then, Roos van Berkel will briefly discuss her research Drifting Bodies through Algorithms, which turns the logic of tracking around. With flocking algorithms, we developed a participatory, choreographic score that experiments with real-time motion tracking as a relational technology. The scores explore different layers of attention regarding the self and surrounding entities. Participants move between their own attention, each other and live visualisations, and the work asks where agency sits when bodies and algorithms move together.

Bios

Lise Amy Hansen is a Professor and currently the Research Chair at the Institute of Design, AHO. She leads the research group ENACT, which focuses on designing for real-time experiences. Her research interest is in how performance and technology meet, with a particular focus on body movement practices and their materialisations, relations, aesthetics and ethics. Current projects include Making Movement Matter (see above) and the Horizon project (Un)EXTRA, on how design can strengthen Europe’s resilience in a time of resource scarcity, extreme conditions and posthuman transition.

Roos van Berkel is a dancer, choreographer and movement analyst. Currently, she is a PhD Fellow at the Design Institute of AHO and a part-time lecturer at the department Expanded Contemporary Dance at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Her interdisciplinary artistic practice focuses on patterns, scores and technology.

Access

MishMash MeetUps are short, informal meetings in the consortium where both early career and established researchers present ongoing projects. The events are open for everyone, but, for security reasons, Zoom links are only provided to people that are affiliated with a MishMash Work Package. If not, please ask for access. The MeshUps are not recorded since we want these short events to also serve as a social meeting point for the centre.
