Term atlas

Words for artificial intelligence and for higher education, as Termportalen at the University of Bergen gives them in Bokmål, Nynorsk and English. The page draws on two termbases: the termbase for artificial intelligence (CC0) and the termbase of Universities Norway (CC BY 4.0), which is also the basis of the term list the site uses when it makes the Nynorsk pages.

The web of definitions

A definition explains a word with other words. Here each term is a dot, and a line means that one term's definition uses the other. Large dots are used on many pages of mishmash.no. The terms in the middle are the ones the field rests on; terms without lines are defined in ordinary words. Press a dot to see the term in three languages, its definition and the pages that use it.

  • Higher education (Universities Norway)

Where Bokmål and Nynorsk part ways

Most terms are written the same way in both written forms of Norwegian. Some differ by a letter or an ending, and some are different words altogether. The last column is where a machine easily goes wrong: a mark shows where Apertium, which makes our Nynorsk pages, gives a different form from Termportalen. There the site corrects it from the term list.

How it is made

Termportalen has no open API, so build_term_atlas.py reads each concept page, one a second, and writes terms.json. A definition counts as using a term when the term appears in it as a whole word, inflected or not. The web and the columns are drawn by term-atlas.js without libraries. The terms and definitions belong to their sources and keep their licences.
