Trond Lossius is a sound and installation artist based in Bergen, Norway. His projects investigate sound, place and space, using sound spatialisation and multichannel audio as an invisible and temporal sculptural medium in works engaging with the site. He is also an avid field recorder, mostly preoccupied with the soundscape of the suburb, recorded using ambisonic surround microphones. He finds that such recordings capture a sense of place rather than sound. He has collaborated with other artists on a large number of cross-disciplinary projects, in particular, sound installations and works for the stage. As part of LMW, in collaboration with Jon Arne Mogstad and Jeremy Welsh, he has done a series of installations combining paintings, video, prints, and sound. “The Atmospherics” is an ongoing series of audio-visual installations by Trond Lossius and Jeremy Welsh based on field recordings from Western Norway and beyond. He has contributed to several productions with the contemporary performance group Verdensteatret, winner of New York Dance and Performance Awards a.k.a. The Bessies 2005-2006 in the Installation & New Media category. Trond Lossius graduated with a master degree in geophysics from the University of Bergen, went on to study music and composition at The Grieg Academy, and was a PhD-level research fellow in the arts at Bergen National Academy of the Arts. He is currently professor and PhD leader at The Norwegian Film School and professor II at The Grieg Academy. He has previously been Head of Research at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. For many years ha held various positions at BEK – Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts. He is one of the developers of the software framework Jamoma, and he has ported Ambisonic Toolkit to a set of plugins for the Reaper DAW. He supervises PhD candidates at several institutions in Norway and Sweden.

    Exploring Authentic Anonymity in Documentary Film through AI

    This artistic research project explores whether AI-based audiovisual transformation can offer a viable and ethically responsible way to anonymise real people in documentary film, protecting participants’ identity while preserving perceived authenticity in their human presence on screen. Conventional anonymisation methods such as heavy blurring, pixelation and strong voice distortion often strip away facial expressions, body language, emotional intensity and relational dynamics that give the material its meaning, and can introduce stigma or associations with crime, danger or shame. The project investigates whether AI can protect identity without erasing the embodied expressions, emotional nuances and relational dynamics that make documentary material meaningful. Through a pilot study, we test selected AI tools and approaches, examine how well they retain expression, gesture, interaction, voice and environmental context, and identify key technical, ethical and legal challenges. The outcomes include proof-of-concept examples, a preliminary anonymisation workflow, and a framework for a larger multidisciplinary research project on ethical, cinematic and technological approaches to anonymisation in documentary practice. The project draws on extensive video recordings from an ongoing artistic research project on role-play and embodied methods in documentary practice and education at the TV School in Lillehammer, providing a concrete use case through which the possibilities and limitations of AI-mediated anonymisation can be explored.
