Research training

Educating people is half of what a centre like this is for. MishMash trains doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, students, and professionals who are long past their studies.

Doctoral fellows

Every academic partner institution in the centre has at least one doctoral fellow connected to MishMash, and several have more. They work inside a work package but belong to the whole network, which is the point: a fellow in music technology and a fellow in law meet questions they would not meet at home.

Fellows take part in every centre activity, and the centre’s own courses are built with them in mind.

Micro courses

Each symposium carries for-credit micro courses on specific methods and topics, taught by people in the network. They are meant first for doctoral fellows, and are open to advanced students, postdoctoral fellows and anyone who wants concentrated input on a method.

Because the symposia rotate between institutions, the courses travel too, and a fellow does not have to be at a large university to reach them.

Students

Hundreds of students at the partner institutions are involved in MishMash through courses, projects and theses. Students are treated as partners in the work rather than an audience for it: they bring a fresh view of tools that older researchers learned late, they are often the first to use what the centre builds, and they carry both the technical know-how and the critical questions out into working life.

The lab and the student interfaces at mishmash.no/ui/ are built by students, in the open.

Lifelong learning

Not everyone who needs to understand creative AI is at a university. The centre runs workshops for creative professionals, educators and technologists, many of them together with local organisations that already know those communities. The sessions are hands-on: people try co-creative tools rather than hear about them, which is the only way to avoid a generation-long lag in what people can actually do with AI.

After MishMash

The ambition is to apply for a national research school in this field, so that the training outlives the centre. Until then, the symposia and the micro courses are where it happens.
