Musical Doppelgangers
Summary
In collaboration with the Ultima festival, this project uses the Disklavier self-playing grand piano to explore the bridge between player piano systems and modern learning machines. Through performances, masterclasses, and lectures, researchers will trace how musical gesture and style can be replayed and transformed without the original player. The project examines how technical replay reshapes time, agency, and presence, often incorporating other technologies like fNIRS brain-scanning helmets to probe the uncanny nature of machine performance.
